Primers & Surfacers
Primers and surfacers for aircraft and defence systems: epoxy primers, waterborne primers, corrosion-inhibiting primers and surfacers. Almost all products are from PPG Aerospace (DeSoto, Super Koropon, Eco-Prime), alongside Intrepid and AkzoNobel. MIL-PRF-23377 for solvent-borne epoxy primers, MIL-PRF-85582 for waterborne epoxy primers and BMS 10-11 for Boeing applications are the most requested specifications. A primer is qualified as a system together with its topcoat.

What is the difference between chromated and non-chromated primers?
Chromated primers have long been the corrosion protection standard; non-chromated primers are spreading because of health and environmental restrictions. In MIL-PRF-23377, Class C is chromated and Class N non-chromated. OEM approval decides.
How do I choose between waterborne and solvent-borne primers?
Waterborne primers (MIL-PRF-85582) have lower VOC; solvent-borne primers (MIL-PRF-23377) tolerate a wider range of application conditions. Your approved process and OEM documentation govern.
