3M™ Fuel Resistant Coating EC-776 is a general purpose, solvent-based adhesive/coating with good adhesion to synthetic rubber, metal, glass and many plastics. It is based on an oil resistant elastomer and resists oil, gasoline and aromatic fuels. It meets the specification requirements of MIL-D-17951E sealing compound. It is applied by brush or flow applicator and is also used to coat aluminium or steel tanks by the fill and drain method. It is not recommended for use with alcohol containing fuels (gasohol) or jet fuel containing microbial organisms.
Typical Properties
- Transparent amber; thin syrup consistency; solvent MIBK and ethanol; solids approx. 24% (by weight)
- Viscosity 1500 ± 500 cP; flash point 13 °C (closed cup)
- At least 10 min between coats; tack free in about 20 minutes, thoroughly dry in about 24 hours
- Coverage approx. 320 ft² per gallon at 1 mil dry film
Performance
- No softening, blistering, loss of adhesion or corrosion after 7 days at 38 °C in 3% salt water and MIL-H-3136 Type III hydrocarbon fluid
- No cracking or loss of adhesion on bending at −54 °C after immersion in hydrocarbon fluid
- Canvas/steel 180° peel: 9.5 piw after 7 days, 13.0 piw after 3 weeks
Application
- Surfaces must be clean, dry and free from oil or grease; no primer needed
- May be diluted with MEK for proper flow in the fill and drain method; clean up with MEK
