LOCTITE® 496™ is a one-component, low viscosity, clear, colourless methyl cyanoacrylate adhesive used for bonding metallic materials and for general purpose applications. It cures with atmospheric moisture and is used on metals, rubbers and plastics. It is suited to thin bond gaps 05 mm).
Typical Properties
- Specific gravity (25 °C) 1.1; viscosity (Brookfield LVF, spindle 1, 30 rpm) 100–120 mPa·s
- Fixture time (22 °C, 50% RH): steel 20–40 s, aluminium 30–60 s, nitrile rubber and neoprene below 10 s
- Lap shear strength after 24 hours (ISO 4587): grit blasted steel 20–30 N/mm², aluminium 15–22 N/mm²
- Tensile strength (ISO 6922): grit blasted steel 12–25 N/mm², nitrile rubber 5–15 N/mm²
- Glass transition temperature 165 °C; dielectric breakdown strength 25 kV/mm
Use
- Surfaces must be clean and free of grease; an activator shortens cure time in large gaps
- Full cure develops over 24 hours; excess adhesive can be removed with Loctite cleaning solvents, nitromethane or acetone
