BONDERITE M-CR 1201 AERO (known as ALODINE 1201) is a non-flammable, chromic acid based coating chemical that produces a chrome conversion coating on aluminium and its alloys. It is used as received for MIL-DTL-5541 work; adjustments and titrations are not needed, and used solutions should be discarded. The coating is gold to tan in colour and becomes part of the aluminium surface, providing a substrate for both paint adhesion and corrosion resistance.
Application
- Brush: apply undiluted to a chemically cleaned surface
- Immersion: for each 100 parts of bath, mix 33 parts of BONDERITE M-CR 1201 and 67 parts of water
- Time 2–5 min; temperature ambient to 38 °C (100 °F)
- Do not allow the chemical to dry on the surface; with brush application rewet several times during the treatment time
Process
- Cleaning (Bonderite C-IC 33, known as ALUMIPREP 33), water rinse, BONDERITE M-CR 1201 application, water rinse, drying
- Thorough rinsing is needed to remove coating salts; poor rinsing can cause blistering and corrosion under paint
- When drying, do not allow the aluminium temperature to exceed 60 °C (140 °F); paint soon after the work is dry
- Do not use galvanized containers; ordinary steel pails may be used only for a short time
