Solvents
Solvents for degreasing, surface preparation and general cleaning: MIL-PRF-680 (PD-680) degreasers, acetone, MEK, isopropyl alcohol, toluene and PPG pre-paint surface preparation solvents (CN series, Desoclean). Brands include Zip-Chem, LPS, PPG and Ardrox; MABAYCO is an authorised distributor for Zip-Chem and PPG Aerospace. The contamination to be removed, evaporation rate, flash point and material compatibility drive selection. Pure solvents follow ASTM and TT standards (e.g. ASTM D329 acetone, TT-T-548 toluene). What is the difference between MIL-PRF-680 types?
The types differ in flash point, evaporation rate and aromatic content. Higher flash point types are safer but evaporate more slowly. The maintenance documentation specifies the type.
Is a pre-paint cleaning solvent the same as a paint thinner?
No. Surface preparation solvents remove oil and contamination before painting; thinners are formulated for a specific paint system. They should not be used interchangeably.
