In aviation, selection follows the specification in the maintenance documentation and the qualified products list (QPL): MIL-PRF-23699 and MIL-PRF-7808 for turbine engine oils, MIL-PRF-83282 for hydraulics, MIL-PRF-81322 for greases and AS5272 for dry film are among the most requested. What do the STD, HTS and C/I classes in MIL-PRF-23699 mean?

STD is standard, HTS high thermal stability and C/I corrosion-inhibited. The engine manufacturer's approval determines which class to use.

Can oils of the same specification from different brands be mixed?

Some specifications include a compatibility requirement, but the aircraft or engine maintenance manual is decisive. Check it before mixing.

When should a dry film lubricant be used?

Where oil or grease would attract dirt, under extreme temperatures or vacuum, and on surfaces where wet lubricants cannot be used. Air-cure and heat-cure types are available.
