Greases
Aviation and industrial greases for airframe and control systems, landing gear, wheel bearings, pneumatic systems, instruments and high-temperature applications. Brands include Molykote, Rocol, Royco, Castrol (Braycote), AeroShell, Nye, Nyco and Krytox. In aviation, grease selection follows the specification in the maintenance documentation: MIL-PRF-81322 (wide-temperature aircraft grease), MIL-PRF-23827 (aircraft and instrument grease), MIL-G-25013 (high-temperature bearing grease) and MIL-G-4343 (pneumatic system grease) are among the most requested. What is the difference between Type I and Type II in MIL-PRF-23827?
The thickener: Type I is lithium soap, Type II is clay (microgel). They are not interchangeable; the required type is stated in the maintenance documentation.
Can different greases be mixed?
Greases with different thickeners or base oils can break down, soften or harden when mixed. When changing grease, purge the old grease completely as the maintenance documentation describes.
