Hydraulic Fluids
Hydraulic fluids for aircraft, helicopters, ground vehicles and industrial systems: mineral, synthetic hydrocarbon and phosphate ester types. Brands include Castrol (Brayco Micronic), AeroShell, Royco, Nyco, Shell, Skydrol and Mobil; MABAYCO is an authorised distributor for Castrol Aviation. MIL-PRF-5606 (mineral), MIL-PRF-83282 and MIL-PRF-87257 (fire-resistant synthetic) are among the most requested aerospace specifications; commercial transport aircraft use phosphate ester fluids (Skydrol). The aircraft maintenance manual specifies the fluid.

What is the difference between MIL-PRF-5606, MIL-PRF-83282 and phosphate ester?
MIL-PRF-5606 is mineral-based, flows well at low temperature but is flammable. MIL-PRF-83282 is a synthetic hydrocarbon with a higher flash point that reduces fire risk. Phosphate ester fluids are fire-resistant but need different seal materials and are incompatible with the others.
Can hydraulic fluids be mixed?
MIL-PRF-5606 and MIL-PRF-83282 are compatible, but mixing reduces the fire-resistance benefit. Phosphate ester fluids must never be mixed with mineral or synthetic hydrocarbon fluids. The maintenance manual governs.
