PPG PR-1196 is a sprayable polyurethane coating designed for use as a secondary fuel barrier on aircraft integral fuel tanks. It is typically applied to the exterior surfaces of the centre wing box tank; should a leak occur in the tank's primary seal system, it aids in containing the leak and preventing fuel migration. The mixed material is very thixotropic, giving good film thickness even on vertical surfaces, and cures at room temperature to a resilient transparent coating with high elongation and tensile strength.
Application Properties (BMS 5-81 Type II Class 1 test methods)
- Colour: Part A tan, Part B clear straw; mix ratio A:B 90:100
- Viscosity: A 30 P (3 Pa·s), B 20 P (2 Pa·s), mixed 50 P (5 Pa·s); application life 2 hours
- At 0.25–0.50 mm wet film: tack free 8 hours and cure 24 hours at 25 °C; 1 hour / 2 hours at 66 °C
Performance (cured 7 days at 25 °C)
- Non-volatile content: A 74%, B 92%; ultimate cure hardness 85
- Tensile strength 3000 psi (20 MPa); 3800 psi (26 MPa) after 24 hours and 4000 psi (27 MPa) after 168 hours at 121 °C
- Elongation 480%; 500% after 24 hours and 450% after 168 hours at 121 °C
Application and Storage
- Two-part can kits; for best performance apply without thinning by brush or airless spray; 0.25–0.50 mm (10–20 mil) wet film on vertical surfaces
- If necessary, thin with dried technical/urethane grade MEK, not exceeding 40% by weight of the mixed components
- At least 6 months below 27 °C (80 °F) in unopened containers
